Teams

  • Selected the JWOC team of 6 men, 6 women, and 8 alternates, with the Selections Committee.  
  • Regular communication with each athlete on the JST, individually and as a team.  
  • Did not attend Flying Pig A meet, but helped plan junior activities and delegated course reviews and junior leadership to JST members.
  • Attended West Point meet.  Course reviews, training, meeting with JST/JWOC team.  Junior activities included a Saturday evening party (HUGE thank-you to the Bretons!).
  • Planned junior activities and meetings at the May Lake George NY meet
  • Planning for JWOC, including draft detailed pre-JWOC schedule

Junior Development

  • Continued working on curriculum and ideas for junior coaching certification

JTESC, Board, OUSA leadership

  • Two meetings with Maryjane Stout, JTESC Chair, JTA on junior safety
  • Met with Tim Parson and JTESC Chair, JTA about junior finances
  • Weekly meetings with JTESC Chair (Guy) and JTA (Barb)
  • Designed, and worked with JTESC to pass, 2014 selection criteria.

Athletes

  • Regular communication with each athlete on the JST.  
  • Named four JST team captains
  • Attended IS/IC championships.  Put on two days of training as a junior team fundraiser; raised over $400.  Conducted junior course reviews after each competition.  Met with the junior standing team after the junior lounge on Saturday.  
  • Attended the California A meet and worked with juniors there.
  • Communicated with organizers and volunteers about junior activities at the Flying Pig, West Point and Team Trials A meets.
  • Helped with uniform ordering.

Local junior programs

  • Met with the BAOC board
  • Advised on possible NEOC/ARK partnership

JTESC

  • Weekly meetings with JTESC Chair (Guy) and JTA (Barb)
  • Rules changes:  Spoke with JTESC, OUSA leadership and others about proposed rules changes (JWOC selection and M/F20 categories), leading up to the March Board phone call.

Athletes

  • Selected the Junior Standing Team from 43 applicants. Notified all applicants. Those who aren’t on the JST are very promising and have been placed on the JDT.
  • Began working with JST members and a few others on training plans for the spring.  
  • Sent out call for nominations for JST team captains
  • Attended WIOL meet (Cascade Orienteering Club). Conducted a training meeting with around 20 juniors. Met with individual juniors and parents to discuss Teams. Spoke with Bresemans and Bob Forgrave.
  • Attended the Vancouver Sprint Camp.  Spoke with a COC parent and other juniors. Spoke with Brent Langbakk (Canada’s junior coach) about joint training that will probably happen both in Canada and the USA this spring.  Had many new ideas.
  • Attended B meet in Tucson AZ:  Conducted two beginner trainings attended by (among others) a boy scout troop, a JROTC unit, and an American Heritage Girls troop.  Conducted course review with ~6 advanced juniors on three days.  Designed and led junior trainings for beginner, intermediate and advanced juniors on two afternoons, and organized control pickup on the third day.  Ran a two-day orienteering training clinic attended by several juniors.

JTESC

  • Weekly meetings with JTESC Chair (Guy) and JTA (Barb)
  • Junior Standing Team selection:  led the decision-making; including two phone meetings.
  • Rules changes:
    • Wrote new proposals; discussed.
    • Met with Clare Durand in Arizona to work on the two rules changes (M/F20 and JWOC selection).
    • Decided to move forward with original (January) proposal on JWOC selection. M/F20 proposal also went to Clare.
  • Posted M/F20 and JWOC selection proposals to Attackpoint for general discussion and feedback.
  • Met with Glen Schorr and Barb to discuss fundraising.  Discussed ideas for fundraising with Barb and Guy.


January 2013

Athletes

  • Individual junior interactions:  commented on AP logs; developed training plans; gave weekly training feedback.  Helped write and develop spring training plans for about 6 juniors.  Emailed about 10-12 juniors and interacted in FB page about weekly armchair trainings.  Interacted with about 12 juniors on AP logs.
  • Wrote and mailed individual letters to ~30 juniors inviting them to apply to JST.  Also sent email to their parents.  Spoke with juniors, parents and coaches in person in GA, DVOA, as well as in several emails and phone calls
  • Conducted junior training/map review and junior team fundraiser at the GA Navigator Cup.  Thanks to Bill Cheatum for his help!  Close to 30 kids were involved in these activities.
  • Communicated with several organizers of upcoming A meets about junior activities and training.

Coaches

  • Conducted coaching clinic at GA Navigator Cup, attended by 13 juniors and coaches.

JTESC

  • Weekly meetings with JTESC Chair (Guy) and JTA (Barb)
  • Junior Standing Team
    • Finalized and sent out JST applications
    • Received 41 applications
    • Full JTESC meeting (#1 of 2) to discuss JST selection
  • Met with Board in Georgia. Talked about vision for the junior program. Proposed new competition format (M/F 17-20).  Discussed JWOC selection.

Junior development at the club level

  • Met with Gary Kraght of BAOC in person
  • Met with DVOA (winter/training planning meeting) in person.  Advised DVOA on development of their junior program.
  • Advised WCOC on March 2-3 junior training camp

Athletes

  • Individual junior interactions: Ethan, Andrew, Carl and Nate O.  Emailed with Addison Bosley and Matt Stout.  Completed emails back to juniors who drafted training plans at NAOC.
  • Finalized draft of proposed athlete agreement and application to join junior standing team and shared with JTESC; worked with Guy and Barb to create the standing team selection process (which will happen in January/February 2013).
  • Worked with Barb, Guy and JTESC to draft the Development Team plan and application; the application will go out in January.
  • Further developed the spring schedule:
    • January 19-20:  Junior training, coaching clinic and meetings at the Georgia A meet. Working with GAOC to design these events.
    • January:  Erin will attend the DVOA winter/junior meeting
    • February 2-3:  Erin will be at WIOL in Seattle.  Will work with Bob Forgrave to arrange junior meeting.
    • February 9-10:  Erin will be at the Vancouver Sprint Camp.
    • February 16-18:  Erin will meet with any interested juniors at the Tucson B meet.
    • February 19-22:  Advanced juniors and other advanced runners are welcome to join us for winter training on beautiful Tucson area maps.   
    • March 2-3:  possible training camps in the midwest, east coast and west coast -- stay tuned
    • March 9-10:  A meet in Kansas (Interscholastics and Intercollegiates).  Working with organizers to design these events.
    • late March: possible training camp in CA
    • April 5-7:  Flying Pig A meet in Indiana
    • April 21st:  Billygoat
    • April 26-28:  West Point A meet in New York
    • April 29-May 9:  training opportunities in Harriman State Park, NY and environs
    • May 10-12:  Individual Championship A meet in New York
    • May 24-26:  tentative training camp in Colorado and/or Wyoming
    • First two weeks of June:  training in the Harriman NY area.

Coaches 

  • Sent out a couple of emails on the coaching email list.  Planning coaching clinic meeting at GA Navigator Cup.

JTESC

  •  Weekly meetings with JTESC Chair (Guy) and JTA (Barb)
  • Full JTESC meeting to discuss JWOC selection rules and process
  • Starting to lay out the ideas/proposals for the Board: new competition format for M/18-20, F/18-20.
  • Continued working on the general curriculum and overall document with implementation of potential kids programs that we want clubs to get going.

Athletes

  • Attended Ohio training camp; assisted with training activities and reviewed courses with kids. Modified activities for more advanced juniors to be more challenged, and assisted event leaders in whatever ways was needed. Led a training for 8 Union County Middle School students. Did woods running, control setting, training exercise, and fun control pick up game.  
  • Attended Ohio A meet. Helped check, set, vet, and pick up all courses for the A meet, about 20 hours of work. Led a course review and junior training after relay champs. Spoke briefly at the Team USA meet-and-greet. Spoke to 15+  juniors about their orienteering and their interest.
  • Replied to some juniors who drafted training plans at NAOC with comments on their plans
  • Discussed with JTESC proposed athlete agreement and applications to join junior development and standing teams.
  • Proposed principles for the spring schedule (coaching clinic, series of junior trainings, focus on JWOC athletes).
  • Coached individual athletes
  • Started hearing from clubs identifying their promising juniors.

Coaching

  • In regular contact with Ethan C, Andrew C, Nate O, Carl Underwood, and Elina B. Connected Kestrel O with Carl Childs as a local contact coach. Connected Anna and Elina B with Mike Sandstrom as a local coach/contact for training.

JTESC

  • Sent around development and standing team proposal
  • Shared Waddington/Adams conversation with JTESC; proposed 6 clubs to start working with.

Junior Development at the club level

  • Conversation with Mike Waddington and Mark Adams.  Next step: talk with 6 key clubs about jr development.  Plan further exchange of information and visits with ARK; consider whether and how to partner with them.

  • Attended Boggs Mountain A meet in CA; met with juniors; set courses and ran training.
  • Attended North American Orienteering Championships in NY.  Ran trainings, meetings, junior/senior course reviews.  Selected and coached relay team.  Worked with athletes to draft training plans.  Multiple conversations.
  • Drafted athlete agreement and application to join junior development & standing teams.
