2014 JWOC Team Selection Races Information

As described in the 2014 JWOC Selection Criteria, the team chosen to represent the USA at the 2014 Junior World Orienteering Championships will be selected based on a combination of ranking scores and performances in three Selection Races — Sprint, Middle and Long. Specific information regarding these races is provided below.

The Basics

  • When:  Friday, March 21 – Sunday, March 23, 2014
  • Where:  The East Bay Area (Concord / Walnut Creek) of “Northern” California.
  • What:  The Run Black Diamond A-event (pending sanctioning), organized by Get Lost!!

The Races

  • Day 1 / Friday:  Middle Distance race; interval starts, afternoon.
  • Day 2 / Saturday:  Long Distance race; interval starts, morning.
  • Day 3 / Sunday:  Two Sprint Distance races: A regular, interval-started race in the morning, followed by a mass-started, one-person relay.  Note:  Only the morning's interval-start Sprint race will count for JWOC Selection.

 


Additional Details

Run Black Diamond will also serve as the (WOC) Team Trials. Therefore, while the race information above is subject to change, any changes should be minimal.

Start times are expected to be randomly drawn, with specific start windows for JWOC candidates to be determined in cooperation with the U.S. (Senior) Team Executive Steering Committee. Therefore, all candidates should be prepared to start at any time during the announced start windows.  

In terms of travel scheduling, candidates should plan to be in the area by Friday morning, and plan to stay through early afternoon on Sunday. While Friday’s Middle starts will be in the afternoon, a model / training area will be available in the morning, and it is strongly recommended that competitors use the training area to familiarize themselves with the terrain and mapping style. Since all Selection Races will have concluded by Sunday afternoon, candidates may participate in the sprint relay at their own discretion (the sanctioning status of this race is still to be determined).  

JWOC candidates will race in the F-21+ (Red course) and M-21+ (Blue course) categories, not the F-20 and M-20 categories. As such, Selection Race performances will not be included in the 2014 JWOC Rankings.  

The usual F-20 (Green course) and M-20 (Red course) categories will still be offered, and will count for 2014 JWOC Rankings. However, this will be moot as no 2014 JWOC candidates should be registered for F-20 or M-20.  

As has been stated previously, the 2014 Interscholastic Championships / Flying Pig XVIII races on April 4-6, 2014, will be the final races in the 2014 Selection Period. Shortly after these races, the Overall Selection Scores will be finalized, and the Scoring List will be posted. Final evaluation of submitted petitions will then commence.

Declaration of Candidacy and Eligibility

As per the Selection Criteria, in order to be considered a candidate for 2014 JWOC selection, a junior athlete must declare his/her candidacy in writing. Simply registering for the F-21+ or M-21+ categories of Run Black Diamond will not be sufficient; each candidate must also notify at least one member of the Junior Team Executive Steering Committee (JTESC) by e-mail of their intent.  Please note that a JWOC candidate’s declaration will not be considered complete until:

  • the notification has been received and
  • event registration has been confirmed.  

Any junior who declares himself / herself to be a candidate for the 2014 JWOC Team must be a U.S. citizen, and either hold a current U.S. passport that will remain valid through the JWOC competition period (July 2014), or be able to obtain a valid U.S. passport no later than June 1, 2014.  As part of each candidate’s declaration, he or she must indicate whether he or she holds a U.S. passport — if so, when it is due to expire; if not, he or she must indicate that a U.S. passport can be obtained by June 2014.

Finally, 2014 JWOC candidates must be members in good standing of Orienteering USA, and their membership must remain in good standing through July 2014. This requirement will be checked using data collected as part of registration for the Selection Races.

Petitions

Complete information on the types of situations for which petitions will be considered, how and when to prepare and submit petitions, and the process by which they will be evaluated, has been posted on the OUSA website.  It is recommended that all candidates review this information, including those who do not expect to be submitting petitions, as circumstances could change.

It should be noted that petitions pertaining to unavoidable conflicts which are known well in advance must be submitted to the U.S. Junior Team Coach, Erin Schirm (erin_schirm [at] orienteeringusa [dot] org), by Wednesday, January 15, 2014.  For these athletes, submission of petitions will constitute declaration of JWOC candidacy.
