O Kansas Members win Sunflower State Games Adventure Race

Orienteer Kansas team members Sandy Beverly, Fletcher Hamel and Michael Eglinski won the elite division at the Sunflower State Games Adventure Race at Milford Lake State Park, on Saturday, July 13, 2013.

Beverly, Hamel and Eglinski, all Lawrence residents, completed the course in 3 hours and 49 minutes. During the competition, they biked, navigated and canoed to various checkpoints throughout the park.

This event was also a training event for Hamel, who has been selected to Team USA for the 11th World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships (WMTBOC) in Rakvere, Estonia on August 26–31, 2013.

Orienteering is a sport that requires competitors to race to a series of checkpoints using a detailed topographical map. The checkpoints must be visited in numerical order, but the competitor can choose the best route between checkpoints. The map is not revealed until the competitor starts the course. The sport has a foot and mountain bike division. Orienteer Kansas is a local club for orienteering enthusiasts. They are cohosts, along with Possum Trot Orienteering Club of Kansas City, for the orienteering race in the Sunflower State Games, held on Sunday, July 21 at Clinton Overlook Park.
