2014 Golden Troll Award Recipients

The Orienteering USA Golden Troll Award is designed to recognize those individuals who have provided exceptional service to the sport of orienteering that extends beyond the local club level.

Sue Dekany (LAOC)

Sue Dekany has been involved in orienteering with LAOC for at least 15 years. In addition to serving on our board for many years in positions including Event Coordinator and President, she has held primary positions at our A-meets. This includes course setting for our recent event at Barton Flats and the 2001 Relay Champs at Vasquez Rocks and Meet Directing for the Trail-O Champs at Vasquez Rocks in 2009. Sue has also worked with Glen Schorr at Orienteering USA on task groups related to the strategic plan. Sue is an extremely dedicated volunteer who works tediously to help grow orienteering in the US. She is an excellent candidate for the Golden Troll Award.

Claire and Dan Dell (OCIN)

Claire Dell and Dan Dell have been cornerstones of Orienteering Cincinnati's core volunteer group for as long as we can remember. They are well-known as "the start crew" at the annual Flying Pig A-Meet, but their service and support goes much deeper than just "the start crew." They have been foundation stones at the center of OCIN's organization for many years, taking on tasks both prominent and obscure, acknowledged and forgotten, and we thank them dearly. Their service reflects great credit upon themselves, Orienteering Cincinnati, and Orienteering USA.

Phil Hawkes-Teeter (EMPO)

Phil has served as President of EMPO for most of the last 15 years and has been the prime motivator for the club's production of several A-meets (and National Championships) over this time, while also providing club leadership at the local level.  He has coordinated the mapping for three ISOM maps (Thacher SP, Moreau Lake SP, and Camp Wakpominee) and served as Meet Director for a total of 8 A-meet days on these maps.  Included in those events were the 2006 Short and Long US Champs (now Middle and Ultra Long), the 2010 US Classic Champs, and the 2013 US S/M/L Champs and Team Trials.  Phil is currently leading the effort for EMPO's production of another (already sanctioned) A-meet for Fall 2015.

Without Phil's leadership, it is doubtful that any of these events would have occurred.  In recognition of the time and effort he has expended to make these National events happen for the orienteering community, we nominate him for the Golden Troll Award.

Glen and Janet Tryson (EMPO)

Janet has been the Treasurer for EMPO for many years, and the Registrar for all of our A-meets for many years.

Glen is the coordinator (committee chair) of course consulting for Orienteering USA A-meets. He has also been the Course Setter for all of EMPO’s recent A-meets. He annually directs/sets a local meet for EMPO. He is also the EMPO “equipment manager”, hosting and managing most of our gear.
